Do Phone Cases Affect Wireless Charging?
Most cases work fine with wireless charging. Thick cases, metal cases, and cases with RFID blocking are the exceptions. Complete guide to case compatibility.
Most cases under 3mm made from plastic, silicone, or genuine leather work with wireless charging. Metal cases, RFID-blocking wallet cases, and cases over 3mm thick may block charging.
The Quick Answer
Most cases work fine with wireless charging. The exceptions are:
- Cases with metal components on the back
- Cases with RFID-blocking material
- Cases thicker than approximately 3mm
- Cases with magnetic inserts (depending on position)
Why Cases Sometimes Block Wireless Charging
Wireless charging transmits energy through an oscillating magnetic field between two coils. Materials that disrupt this field cause problems:
Metal — Absorbs and reflects magnetic fields. Any metal between the phone and charger (metal plate inserts, metallic decoration, metal kickstands) significantly reduces or eliminates power transfer.
RFID-blocking material — Designed to block radio frequencies to protect credit cards. Also blocks the Qi frequency band. Found in many wallet cases.
Excessive thickness — Qi coils have an optimal coupling distance. Cases beyond ~3mm increase the air gap between coils and reduce efficiency below the threshold for charging initiation.
Case Material Guide
| Material | Effect on Wireless Charging |
| TPU / silicone (<2mm) | No effect |
| Polycarbonate hard plastic | No effect |
| Genuine leather (<3mm) | No effect |
| Faux leather | Typically no effect |
| Rugged cases (thick) | May reduce efficiency |
| Metal bumper only | Usually fine if back is clear |
| Full metal case | Blocks charging |
| Wallet cases (with cards) | Often blocks — check for metal/RFID |
| MagSafe / Qi2 magnetic cases | Designed to work — fine |
How to Test Your Case
Remove the case and charge the phone. If it charges normally, confirm the case is the issue by replacing it and observing speed.
If charging works with case removed but not with case on, compare charging speeds — sometimes a thick case simply slows charging rather than stopping it completely.
Choosing a Wireless Charging Compatible Case
Look for cases that explicitly state Wireless Charging Compatible on packaging. For guaranteed alignment and maximum charging performance, choose Qi2 or MagSafe compatible cases — these are tested and certified to work with wireless charging at full speed.
