Why Does My Phone Say Charging But the Battery Is Not Going Up?
If your battery shows charging but the percentage is not rising, power consumption equals or exceeds charging rate. Here are all the causes and fixes.
Problem Summary
Your phone is on the wireless charger and the charging indicator is displayed, but the battery percentage is not increasing — or it is even slowly decreasing.
Why This Happens
Wireless charging delivers power at a fixed wattage. Your phone consumes power based on what it is doing. When consumption equals or exceeds the charger output, the net battery change is zero or negative — even with the charger active.
Power Consumption Examples
| Activity | Approximate Power Draw |
| Screen off, idle | 0.3-0.8W |
| Screen on, standby brightness | 1-2W |
| Navigation (GPS + screen) | 3-5W |
| Video streaming, high brightness | 4-7W |
| Mobile gaming | 5-10W |
Wireless Charger Output
| Charger | Effective Power to Battery |
| 5W Qi | ~3.5-4W (after efficiency loss) |
| 10W Qi | ~7-8W |
| 15W Qi2 | ~11-12W |
A 5W charger delivering 3.5W to the battery cannot keep up with GPS navigation consuming 4W — resulting in a net battery drain despite showing as charging.
Fixes
Fix 1: Lock the Screen
The screen is the largest power consumer. Simply locking the screen reduces draw by 1-7W, allowing the charger to gain on the battery.
Fix 2: Switch to Aeroplane Mode
Disabling radios (cellular, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth) eliminates 0.5-2W of background consumption. Combined with screen off, this ensures even a 5W charger makes progress.
Fix 3: Close Background Apps
Check for apps using high CPU or GPS in the background. Go to Settings > Battery > Battery Usage to identify culprits.
Fix 4: Upgrade to a Faster Charger
A 15W charger has enough headroom to charge the battery even during moderate active use. If you regularly charge while using the phone, upgrade to at least a 10-15W charger.
Fix 5: Reduce Screen Brightness
Automatic or manual reduction in screen brightness directly lowers power draw and allows more charger output to reach the battery.
