Why Does Wireless Charging Stop Working Overnight?
If your phone stops charging overnight on a wireless charger, the likely causes are battery protection mode, overheating, or the phone shifting off the pad.
Problem Summary
You place your phone on a wireless charger before bed and expect to wake up to a full battery, but your phone shows only 80-85% — or even less.
Cause 1: Battery Protection Mode (Most Common)
Most modern Android and iOS phones include a battery protection feature that limits the maximum charge level to extend long-term battery health. On Samsung phones, this is called Battery Protection and is found in Settings > Battery. When enabled, the phone charges to approximately 80-85% and then stops.
This is not a bug — it is a feature. It is very good for long-term battery health.
Fix if you need 100%: Disable Battery Protection before charging overnight when you know you need a full battery. Some phones allow you to schedule Battery Protection so it only activates on certain days.
Cause 2: Adaptive Charging / Scheduled Charging
Some phones learn your wake-up schedule and deliberately delay completing a full charge until shortly before your alarm. The phone may charge to 80% quickly, then pause, and only complete the final 20% in the hour before you typically wake up. This reduces time spent at 100%, which causes the most battery degradation.
Fix: Check Settings > Battery > Adaptive Charging or Scheduled Charging. Disable if you want a straightforward overnight charge.
Cause 3: Phone Shifting Off the Charging Coil
A flat charging pad can lose alignment if you pick the phone up at night and replace it slightly off-centre, or if the phone gradually slides during the night.
Fix: Use a charging stand with a cradle, or ensure the phone is well-centred on a flat pad. Consider adding non-slip material to the pad.
Cause 4: Overheating in a Warm Environment
Overnight in a warm bedroom or under a blanket, the phone and charger can reach high enough temperatures to trigger thermal protection, pausing charging.
Fix: Charge in a cooler location. Do not place the phone under bedding while charging. Remove the case to improve heat dissipation.
Cause 5: Charger Power Loss
Rarely, a power outage, power strip surge protector trip, or loose connection can interrupt charging mid-session.
Fix: Check the power connection in the morning. Consider a small UPS for your nightstand if power interruptions are common.
