Why Does Wireless Charging Work Sometimes and Not Others?
Inconsistent wireless charging is almost always caused by alignment, a partially obstructing case, or a borderline-quality charger. Here is how to diagnose it.
Problem Summary
Wireless charging works perfectly on some occasions but fails completely or partially on others. The phone charges fine when you are careful to position it, but frequently shows no charging when placed casually.
Diagnosing Intermittent Charging
Intermittent issues are harder to diagnose than complete failures. The key is to isolate the variable.
Step 1: Evaluate Placement Consistency
The most common cause of intermittent wireless charging is inconsistent positioning. If you place the phone slightly differently each time, some placements have coil alignment and others do not.
Test: Place the phone with maximum care to centre it on the pad. Does charging initiate reliably when you do this? If yes, the fix is ensuring consistent placement.
Solution: Use a charging stand (upright cradle) that physically holds the phone in one position. Or mark the correct position on a flat pad with a small piece of tape.
Step 2: Evaluate the Case
Cases that are right on the threshold of Qi compatibility will sometimes work and sometimes fail depending on micro-positioning. This is particularly common with:
- Cases slightly thicker than 3mm
- Cases with card slots or wallets in the back
- Slightly warped cases that do not sit flat
Test: Remove the case entirely. Does charging become reliable? If yes, the case is borderline.
Solution: Replace the case with one explicitly rated as wireless charging compatible.
Step 3: Evaluate the Charger
Cheap wireless chargers may have inconsistent detection logic that sometimes successfully initiates charging and sometimes fails. High-quality Qi-certified chargers pass standardised testing for exactly this reason.
Test: Try the same phone on a different, preferably higher-quality or certified charger. Does reliability improve?
Solution: Upgrade to a Qi or Qi2 certified charger from a reputable brand.
Step 4: Check for Thermal Patterns
If charging is reliable in the morning but inconsistent in the evening, temperature may be a factor. A warm bedroom, direct sunlight, or heavy phone use before charging can raise phone temperature enough to cause thermal throttling.
